Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 86-97

Chapter 17: Prohibiting one who has eaten garlic, onions, or leeks, and other things that have an offensive odor from coming to the masjid, until that smell has gone away, and such a person should be expelled from the masjid.

Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna and Zuhayr ibn Harb narrated to us: Yahya - who is al-Qattan - narrated to us, on the authority of Ubaydullah, who said: Nafi' informed me, on the authority of Ibn Umar, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said during the Battle of Khaybar: "Whoever eats from this tree - meaning garlic - should not go to the mosques." Zuhayr said: "During a battle." He did not mention Khaybar. (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 86)

Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us, Ibn Numayr narrated to us, and he said: Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Numayr narrated to us - and this wording is his - he said: My father narrated to us, he said: Ubaydullah narrated to us, on the authority of Nafi’, on the authority of Ibn Umar, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Whoever eats this herb, let him not approach our mosques until its odor goes away,” meaning garlic. (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 87)

Zuhair ibn Harb told me, Ismail told us - meaning Ibn Ulayyah - on the authority of Abd al-Aziz - who is Ibn Suhayb - who said: Anas was asked about garlic, and he said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Whoever eats from this tree should not approach us or pray with us.” (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 88)

Muhammad ibn Rafi' and Abd ibn Humayd told me. Abd told us. Ibn Rafi' said: Abd al-Razzaq told us. Ma'mar told us, on the authority of al-Zuhri, on the authority of Ibn al-Musayyab, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "Whoever eats from this tree, let him not come near our mosque and let him not annoy us with the smell of garlic." (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 89)

Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us, Kathir ibn Hisham narrated to us, on the authority of Hisham al-Dastawai, on the authority of Abu al-Zubayr, on the authority of Jabir, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, forbade eating onions and leeks. We were overcome by need, so we ate from them. Then he said: “Whoever eats from this rotten plant, let him not come near our mosque, for the angels are harmed by it.” "From what harms people." (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 90)

Abu al-Tahir and Harmalah told me: Ibn Wahb told us: Yunus told me, on the authority of Ibn Shihab: Ata’ ibn Abi Rabah told me that Jabir ibn Abdullah said - and in Harmalah’s narration: He claimed that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Whoever eats garlic or onions, let him keep away from us or keep away from our mosque and stay in his house.” A pot containing green vegetables was brought to him, and he found it had a foul odor. He asked about the vegetables and was informed about them. He said, “Bring them near.” He brought them to some of his companions, but when he saw them, he was reluctant to eat them. He said, “Eat, for I am speaking to someone with whom you do not speak.” (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 91)

Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 86-97

Muhammad ibn Hatim told me, Yahya ibn Sa`id told us, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, who said: Ata` told me, on the authority of Jabir ibn `Abdullah, on the authority of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who said: “Whoever eats this vegetable, garlic” - and he said once: “Whoever eats onions, garlic, or leeks” - “should not come near our mosque, for the angels are harmed by what harms the children of Adam.” .‏ (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 92)

And Ishaq ibn Ibrahim told us, Muhammad ibn Bakr told us, and he said, and Muhammad ibn Rafi’ told me, Abd al-Razzaq told us, they both said, Ibn Jurayj told us, with this chain of transmission: “Whoever eats from this tree - meaning garlic - should not visit us in our mosque.” And he did not mention onions and leeks. (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 93)

Amr al-Naqid narrated to me, Ismail ibn Ulayyah narrated to us, on the authority of al-Jariri, on the authority of Abu Nadrah, on the authority of Abu Sa`id, who said: “No sooner had Khaybar been conquered than we, the companions of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him), stumbled upon that garlic plant while the people were hungry. We ate a great deal of it, then we went to the mosque and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him) smelled the stench, so he said: ‘Whoever eats from This evil tree is something, so do not let it approach us in the mosque.” The people said, “It has been forbidden, it has been forbidden.” This news reached the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he said, “O people, I do not have the right to forbid what God has made lawful for me, but it is a tree whose smell I hate.” (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 94)

Harun ibn Sa'id al-Ayli and Ahmad ibn 'Isa narrated to us: Ibn Wahb narrated to us: 'Amr informed me, on the authority of Bukayr ibn al-Ashja', on the authority of Ibn Khabab, on the authority of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, passed by an onion farm with his companions. Some of them stopped and ate some of it, while others did not eat. We were happy to see him, and he invited those who had not eaten. They ate the onions, and he delayed the others until its smell went away. (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 95)

Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us, Yahya ibn Sa`id narrated to us, Hisham narrated to us, Qatada narrated to us, on the authority of Salim ibn Abi al-Ja`d, on the authority of Ma`dan ibn Abi Talhah, that `Umar ibn al-Khattab delivered a sermon on Friday and mentioned the Prophet of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he mentioned Abu Bakr and said, “I saw in a dream as if a rooster had pecked me three times, and I do not see it except as a sign of a jinn.” My time is approaching, and some people are ordering me to appoint a successor, but Allah would not let His religion, His succession, or that with which He sent His Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, be lost. So if a matter comes to me in a hurry, then the succession is a matter of consultation between these six, with whom the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was pleased. I know that some people are criticizing this matter, and I have struck them with my own hand. This is against Islam. If they do that, then they are the enemies of Allah, the disbelieving, the misguided. Then, I will not leave anything after me that is more important to me than the kalalah. I did not consult the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, about anything as I consulted him about the kalalah. He was never harsh with me about anything as he was harsh with me about it until he stabbed my chest with his finger and said, “O Umar, is the verse of the summer not sufficient for you?” which is at the end of Surat An-Nisa’: “And if I live, I will pass judgment in it with a judgment that will be passed by those who read the Qur’an and those who do not read the Qur’an.” Then he said: “O Allah, I call You to witness over the leaders of the cities, and I only sent them over them so that they would be just toward them, and so that they would teach the people their religion and the Sunnah of their Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and distribute their spoils among them, and bring to me what I They were confused about their affair. Then, O people, you eat two plants that I do not see as anything but evil: this onion and garlic. I saw the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, when he found their odor from a man in the mosque, he would order that he be taken out to Al-Baqi’. So whoever eats them should cook them to death. (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 96)

Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us, Ismail ibn Ulayyah narrated to us, on the authority of Sa`id ibn Abi `Aruba, who said: Zuhayr ibn Harb and Ishaq ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, both on the authority of Shababah ibn Sawwar, who said: Shu`bah narrated to us, all on the authority of Qatadah, in this chain of transmission there is something similar.
