Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 79-85

 

Chapter 16: It is disliked to offer salat in the presence of food that one wants to eat. It is disliked to offer salat while restraining the urge to relieve oneself, and so on.

 

Amr al-Naqid, Zuhair ibn Harb, and Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah informed me: Sufyan ibn Uyaynah told us, on the authority of al-Zuhri, on the authority of Anas ibn Malik, on the authority of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, who said: “When dinner is ready and the Iqamah (prayer) is pronounced, then start with dinner.” (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 79)

 

Harun ibn Sa'id al-Ayli narrated to us, Ibn Wahb narrated to us, Amr informed me, on the authority of Ibn Shihab, who said: Anas ibn Malik narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "When the evening meal is approaching and the time for prayer is approaching, then start with it before you pray the Maghrib prayer, and do not hasten to finish your evening meal." (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 80)

 

Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us, Ibn Numayr, Hafs, and Wakee’ narrated to us, on the authority of Hisham, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Aisha, on the authority of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace. Similar to the hadith of Ibn Uyaynah, on the authority of al-Zuhri, on the authority of Anas. (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 81)

 

Ibn Numayr narrated to us, Abu H narrated to us, he said: Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us - and this wording is his - Abu Usamah narrated to us, they said: Ubaydullah narrated to us, on the authority of Nafi’, on the authority of Ibn Umar, he said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “When one of you has his dinner set and the Iqamah for prayer is pronounced, then start with the dinner and do not rush until it is finished.” (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 82)

 

Muhammad ibn Ishaq al-Musayyabi narrated to us, Anas narrated to me - meaning Ibn ‘Iyadh - on the authority of Musa ibn ‘Uqbah. H. And Harun ibn ‘Abdullah narrated to us, Hammad ibn Mas‘adah narrated to us, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj. H. He said: And al-Salt ibn Mas‘ud narrated to us, Sufyan ibn Musa narrated to us, on the authority of Ayyub, all of them on the authority of Nafi‘, on the authority of Ibn ‘Umar, on the authority of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace. In a similar way. (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 83)

 

Muhammad ibn ‘Abbad narrated to us, Hatim - he is Ibn Ismail - narrated to us, on the authority of Ya’qub ibn Mujahid, on the authority of Ibn Abi ‘Ateeq, who said: “Al-Qasim and I narrated a hadith in the presence of ‘Aa’ishah - may Allah be pleased with her - and Al-Qasim was a man who spoke badly and had a concubine. So ‘Aa’ishah said to him: ‘Why don’t you narrate as my nephew does? I know where you came from.’” This one was disciplined by his mother, and your mother disciplined you. He said: Al-Qasim became angry and attacked her. When he saw Aisha’s table being brought, he stood up. She said: Where? He said: I am praying. She said: Sit down. He said: I am praying. She said: Sit down, you traitor. I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say: “There is no prayer in the presence of food, nor while one is being repelled by the two most evil things.” .‏ (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 84)

 

Yahya ibn Ayyub, Qutaybah ibn Sa'id, and Ibn Hujr narrated to us: Ismail - who is Ibn Ja'far - narrated to us: Abu Hazrah al-Qass informed me, on the authority of Abdullah ibn Abi Ateeq, on the authority of Aishah, on the authority of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, something similar. He did not mention the story of al-Qasim in the hadith. (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 85)
